The European Parliament has, for the first time, used the term “Christianophobia” in an official human rights resolution, marking a significant shift in how religious discrimination is being framed at the European level.

In the same document, the Parliament acknowledged that Christianity remains the most persecuted religion globally, citing that more than 300 million Christians face high levels of persecution and discrimination. This includes regions where believers are subjected to imprisonment, violent attacks, forced displacement, and, in some cases, killings.

The resolution highlights growing concerns about the safety and rights of Christians in various parts of the world, pointing to a pattern of targeted violence and systemic marginalization. Lawmakers emphasized the need for greater awareness and stronger international responses to address these challenges.

Notably, the Parliament also drew attention to a gap within the European Union’s institutional framework. While there are designated coordinators addressing other forms of religious discrimination, there is currently no EU coordinator specifically tasked with combating anti-Christian hatred.

This absence, according to the resolution, raises questions about consistency in how religious freedoms are protected across different faith groups. Members of Parliament called for a more balanced and inclusive approach to safeguarding all religious communities.

The introduction of the term “Christianophobia” into official EU language is expected to spark debate, both within Europe and globally, as policymakers, human rights advocates, and religious groups weigh its implications.

As discussions continue, the resolution signals a broader recognition of religious persecution as a pressing global issue — and a call for more structured, equitable responses to protect freedom of belief in all its forms.
