Ghanaian businessman and media entrepreneur Stephen Kwabena Boateng, popularly known as Kwabena Kesse or Kessben, has reportedly died at the age of 68.

His death has sent shockwaves through Ghana’s business and media circles, particularly in the Ashanti Region, where he built much of his business empire.

Kessben was born on September 12, 1957, and grew up at North Suntreso in Kumasi. Over more than three decades, he built a diversified group of businesses spanning media, education, transportation, hospitality, financial services and other sectors.

His influence also extended into Ghana’s financial sector, with Kessben holding majority shares in Multi Credit Savings and Loans Ltd.

Kessben’s media legacy

Perhaps one of his most visible contributions was in Ghana’s media industry.

Through Kessben FM Limited, he established a media network that included Kessben FM, Kessben TV and Aseda TV.

He was the sole shareholder of Kessben FM Limited, the company under which the media businesses were registered.

His media ventures became particularly influential in Kumasi and the Ashanti Region, giving the businessman a significant presence in Ghana’s broadcasting landscape.

Beyond business

Kessben was also known for his philanthropic activities and support for social causes.

He served as a member of Ghana’s National Peace Council between 2004 and 2010, contributing to efforts aimed at promoting peace and national cohesion.

His passing therefore marks the loss of a businessman whose activities extended well beyond commercial enterprise.

Tributes emerge

News of Kessben’s reported death has already triggered reactions across social media and Ghana’s media landscape, with colleagues, public figures and members of the public remembering his contribution to business and broadcasting.

A recent public appearance of the businessman has also resurfaced online following the reports of his death, further prompting reactions from Ghanaians.

At the time of reporting, details surrounding his illness and the circumstances of his death remain limited.

Kessben’s death comes just weeks before his 69th birthday.

He leaves behind a business legacy spanning more than 30 years and a media brand that became a household name, particularly in Kumasi and the Ashanti Region.

More details, including official statements from his family and the KESSBEN Group, are expected to emerge.
