GENERAL MENSA-WOOD: THE MAN, THE MYSTERY, AND THE TRUTH

How many of you remember General Mensa-Wood?

Just yesterday, someone asked me a simple but deep question: Did he die a natural death, or was there more to the story? That question pushed me to dig deeper… and here is what history tells us.

He was a respected Ghanaian military officer who rose to become the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) of the Ghana Armed Forces from June 1990 until his death in March 1992.

Born on 10th November 1940 in Cape Coast, he was a brilliant and disciplined man who went through Ghana National College and received advanced military training both in the United Kingdom and at the V.I. Lenin Military Political Academy.

Before becoming CDS, he served as Chief of Army Staff from 1987 to 1990. He was also part of the PNDC government and played key roles in national assignments, including leading the Cocoa Evacuation Task Force in 1982, helping to transport cocoa from areas where poor roads made movement difficult.

But one of the most important things he is remembered for is his “human face philosophy.” At a time when the military was known for strict control and fear, General Mensa-Wood tried to bring a more professional and humane approach to leadership.

Now, to the big question…

How did he die?

He died on 21st March 1992 at Cromwell Hospital in London. According to official records, he died from pancreatic cancer.

So yes, per official records he died a natural death.

He was later buried at the Osu Military Cemetery in Accra, where many of Ghana’s respected soldiers have been laid to rest.

Even though his life was not very long, his impact on the Ghana Armed Forces remains strong. He is remembered as a leader who tried to change the system from fear to professionalism.

Sometimes, history leaves us with questions… but when we search deeply, the truth speaks clearly.

May his soul rest in peace.

Or do still argue that there was something fishy about his death?
