IYD 2026: We Must Close The Gap Between Ambition And Opportunity for Young People – Antonio
A young person in Tamale may face different circumstances from one in Takoradi, Kumasi or Accra. Yet, across these differences, the aspirations remain similar: quality education, meaningful employment, dignity, opportunity, and a voice in the decisions that shape their future.
Today, Ghana joins the global community to celebrate International Youth Day, a moment to recognize the aspirations, contributions and enormous potential of young people.
This year’s theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” speaks directly to the Ghanaian experience. Over the years, my engagement with young people across Ghana has reinforced one conviction: “Our young people do not lack ambition. What we must continue to close is the gap between ambition and opportunity.”
I am encouraged by the efforts being made by government to expand opportunities for young people through skills development, entrepreneurship, employment, education and digital innovation. These initiatives provide important pathways for young Ghanaians to develop their potential and build sustainable livelihoods.
But opportunities only become meaningful when we are prepared to take advantage of them. To every young Ghanaian, my message is simple: do not wait for the perfect opportunity. Prepare yourself for the opportunities that exist today. Learn a skill. Build your network. Embrace technology. Take internships seriously. Start something. Volunteer. Ask questions. Keep learning.
“Opportunity may open the door, but preparation determines who is ready to walk through it.” We must also recognize that youth development is a shared responsibility. Government must create the right environment; the private sector must create opportunities; institutions must open doors; and young people must be willing to step forward, prepare themselves and take responsibility for the future they desire.
Our goal must be a Ghana where talent is not limited by geography, opportunity is not determined by background, and a young person’s circumstances do not become the ceiling of their dreams.
Ghana’s youth are partners in building Ghana today. As we celebrate this day, I encourage every young Ghanaian to remain hopeful, purposeful and determined. Your circumstances may explain where you begin, but they should never determine where you end.
Let us dream boldly.
Let us prepare deliberately.
Let us seize every opportunity.
And together, let us build the Ghana we want to inherit.
