CIB Ghana and BoG reaffirm commitment to ethics, professionalism in banking
The Bank of Ghana (BoG) and the Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIB Ghana) have pledged their shared commitment to deepen collaboration, strengthen ethics and professionalism to ensure a more resilient and trusted banking sector.
This commitment was made when the Governing Council of CIB Ghana paid a courtesy visit on the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama on Friday, 31 July 2026 at the Bank Square in Accra. It was also an opportunity to formally introduce the new leadership of CIB Chana and to express appreciation for the Governor’s leadership of the banking industry and support for the Institute.
The engagement focused on the need to raise the standard of ethics and professionalism, customer protection and cybersecurity and fraud prevention. Also, digital assets, banking sector reforms, future of technology; and the role of AI and quantum computing in defining the future of banking were discussed. Both institutions underscored the importance of closer collaboration in addressing emerging risks and strengthening the standards and human capital required to sustain confidence in the banking sector.
The Governing Council also briefed the Governor on key CIB Ghana initiatives, including the Branch CEO Programme, Chartered Banker for Executive Leadership (CBEL) Programme, banking industry -wide ethics certification and fraud campaigns, and research among others. These initiatives form part of the Institute’s commitment to developing competent, ethical and future-ready professionals for Ghana’s financial services industry.
The incoming President of CIB Ghana, Dr. Ellen Ohene-Afoakwa, outlined a vision to dial up ethics and professionalism, rebuild the Bankers’ House and host a truly World Conference of Banking Institutes (WCBI). Ghana is set to host the 2028 edition of WCBI in Accra. The event is expected to provide an important platform for Ghana to showcase its banking sector, professional education ecosystem, contribution to global banking development and how how the future of banking is being redefined right here in Africa.
On his part, the Governor said that as expected of the health sector for example, those working in the banking sector must demonstrate competence, professionalism and ethical conduct. He commended CIB Ghana’s support for efforts of the Bank, GAB and other stakeholders of the banking sector to combat fraud and emerging risks that threaten the foundation of trust.
He also outlined the Bank’s effort to ensure rigour of verifications in the banking sector, and ensue success of community banking reforms. He challenged the Institute to extend its programmes of ethics and capacity building to the community banking and the wider financial ecosystem. The meeting reaffirmed the shared commitment of CIB Ghana and the Bank of Ghana to building a sound, resilient, ethical and trusted banking sector that supports sustainable economic growth.
