The Mexican city of Guadalajara — one of the host cities for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup — has reportedly witnessed a surge in violence less than four months before the global tournament is set to kick off.
Mexican authorities confirmed that a recent federal military operation resulted in the killing of Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known as “El Mencho,” the alleged leader of the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). He had long been considered one of the most influential and dangerous figures in Mexico’s organized crime landscape.
In the immediate aftermath of the operation, reports indicate that cartel groups launched coordinated retaliatory actions across parts of Guadalajara and several other states, including Michoacán, Guanajuato, Colima, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas.
Local media and eyewitness accounts suggest that armed groups set up roadblocks, torched vehicles, and targeted businesses in multiple areas. There were also reports of unrest at Guadalajara’s airport, where videos circulating online appeared to show passengers running for safety amid the chaos.
El Mencho had been one of the most wanted drug traffickers globally. The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) had offered a $15 million reward for information leading to his capture.
Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to remain indoors as security forces work to regain control and restore order. The escalation raises fresh concerns about security in a city preparing to welcome thousands of international visitors for one of the world’s largest sporting events.
