The Minister for Transport, Hon. Joseph Bukari Nikpe has outlined a six-point strategic agenda aimed at transforming Ghana’s ports into a world-class maritime and logistics hub.
He emphasised infrastructure expansion, digital innovation, sustainability, workforce development, multimodal connectivity and stronger regional integration as key pillars for future growth.

Delivering the keynote address at the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority’s (GPHA) 40th Anniversary Industry Awards Dinner, the Minister said the next chapter of Ghana’s maritime sector must be driven by a bold vision that positions the country as the preferred gateway for trade in West Africa.

He identified the expansion and modernization of port infrastructure as a critical priority, stressing the need for continued investment to accommodate growing trade volumes and enhance operational efficiency. The Minister also highlighted digital transformation as essential to improving service delivery, reducing turnaround times and strengthening the competitiveness of Ghana’s ports

According to him, sustainability must remain at the forefront of port operations through environmentally responsible practices that balance growth with environmental stewardship. He further underscored the importance of developing the human capital required to drive innovation and excellence across the maritime industry.

Hon. Nikpe also called for greater integration of road, rail and inland transport systems to create seamless cargo movement and strengthen the country’s logistics network. Additionally, he urged stakeholders to deepen regional cooperation and integration efforts to position Ghana as a leading maritime and trade hub within the African Continental Free Trade Area framework.

While acknowledging the significant progress made by GPHA over the past four decades, the Transport Minister emphasized that realizing this vision would require stronger collaboration among government, industry players, development partners and the private sector.

Chairman of the GPHA Board of Directors, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah commended stakeholders whose commitment and partnership have contributed to the growth of Ghana’s ports and the wider maritime industry over the last 40 years

He noted that the anniversary was not only a celebration of past achievements but also an opportunity to reaffirm a collective commitment to innovation, operational excellence and sustainable growth. He urged industry players to continue working together to ensure that the nation’s ports remain competitive in an increasingly dynamic global trade environment.
Welcoming guests to the event, the Director-General of GPHA, Majorn General Paul Seidu Tanye-Kulono, described the Authority’s 40-year journey as a story of resilience, collaboration and transformation.

He paid tribute to former Director Generals, Directors of Ports, staff, customers and industry partners whose contributions have shaped the Authority’s success and helped position Ghana’s ports among the most important trade gateways in the sub-region.
Major General Tanye-Kulono said the awards dinner was dedicated to recognizing individuals and organizations whose excellence, commitment and partnership have supported GPHA’s growth and the advancement of the maritime sector.
He expressed confidence that with continued collaboration and a shared commitment to innovation, Ghana’s ports would be well-positioned to achieve even greater milestones in the decades ahead.
