Sectoral Performance Of The Last Six Months Of 2026: Ministry Of Energy And Green Transition
The NDC Government continued to stabilise electricity supply, strengthen system reliability and reduce the financial risks within the power sector. In doing that;
The first 171-megawatt phase of the AKSA Anwomaso Thermal Project was commissioned and synchronised with the national grid. The steam component will increase total capacity to 200 megawatts by the end of the year.
Construction of the 100-megawatt Cenit Thermal Plant is about 90 percent complete, while the VRA Anwomaso Thermal Plant is expected to make its full 250-megawatt capacity available by the end of 2026.
Reconstruction of the Akosombo switchyard following the April 2026 fire is progressing, with completion expected by the end of the year.
Government is also procuring about 2,000 distribution transformers to replace damaged equipment, relieve overloaded networks and improve nationwide service reliability.
Government is also scaling up the distribution of 457,000 LPG cookstoves to expand access to clean cooking.
A new National Petroleum Authority Bill has received Cabinet approval and has been submitted to Parliament of Ghana to modernise the regulation and governance of the downstream petroleum sector.
The return of the Tema Oil Refinery Ltd. following its turnaround maintenance has increased local refining capacity. Government has also facilitated domestic crude supply arrangements for TOR and the Sentuo Oil Refinery to strengthen energy security and reduce dependence on imported petroleum products.
The Government is also implementing 35 mini-grids across 47 island and lakeside communities to expand electricity access in underserved areas.
Fellow Ghanains, under the Scaling-up Renewable Energy Programme, about 3,600 smart net meters have been procured, while implementation of 750 Solar Home Systems for public institutions and households is progressing.
Government has yet again completed Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) studies to support renewable energy integration and grid stability.
Under the All-in-One Solar Street Lighting Project, 6,834 streetlights have been installed, while more than 10,000 foundations have been prepared for further installations.
The Solar-powered irrigation projects at Buipe and under the Water-Energy-Food Nexus Programme are also advancing to improve agricultural water security and rural productivity.
Government has developed the Renewable Energy Authority Bill and the Renewable Energy Implementation and Green Transition Framework to strengthen the institutional basis for Ghana’s energy transition.
The Ministry of Energy and Green Transition led by the Honourable Minister John Abdulai Jinapor launched the Turnkey Project under the Rural Electricity Acceleration and Urban Intensification Initiative (REIP) in the Volta Region on behalf of H.E. President John Dramani Mahama as part of the Government’s Big Push Agenda.
The GH¢598 million investment will connect 206 underserved communities across 18 Districts in the Volta Region to the National Grid, as Government accelerates the connection of unelectrified communities across four priority Regions this year.
This NDC Government is not only expanding access but also strengthening the systems to ensure reliable and sustainable supply.
The Project includes; 45km Asiekpe–Ho 161kV transmission line and the new 161/34.5kV Bulk Supply Point at Ho, which will add capacity and improve reliability along the Asiekpe–Ho–Kadjebi corridor.
The NDC Government goal is universal electricity access by 2030, with no community left behind.
GRIDCo over the past six months recorded 25,860 GWh of electricity, recorded a profit after tax of GH¢584.46 million, and achieved impressive reliability and availability across its network.
This will go in a long way to restore GRIDCo’s position as one of Africa’s most reliable, innovative and financially sustainable transmission utilities and to deliver the dependable electricity service that Ghanaians deserve.
Ghana Gas delivered strong results, recording growth in gas processing and LPG production, alongside an impressive 97% increase in net profit.

Kumasi–Anwomaso Transmission Line Upgrade (K1–K2 Project), a critical investment to strengthen electricity supply in Kumasi and the wider Ashanti Region.
The project will replace an ageing 19 KM single-circuit 364MVA transmission line with a modern, higher-capacity double-circuit 2x488MVA (978MVA), more than doubling the current capacity.
GRIDCo will also upgrade one of the transformers at the Kumasi (Ahodwo) Substation from 66MVA to 145MVA, significantly improving the reliability, stability and resilience of power

As at March 2025, 2,491 containers were listed as uncleared. Audit found only 1,134 at the port, leaving over 1,347 missing, value about GH¢1.5bn.This happen under the NPP Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia Administration. 40 containers were first recovered with one arrest.
By May 2025 under this new NDC Administration, A joint committee was set up (National Security, Transport Ministry, GPHA, Customs) traced and retrieved 2,637 containers in total, now more than double the initial missing figure.
