The Government yesterday announced the immediate waiver of visa requirements for Ghanaian passport holders, in line with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on Thursday.
“The Government of the Republic of Zambia on Thursday, 5th February 2026, signed a Visa Waiver Agreement with the Government of the Republic of Ghana, providing for the waiver of visa requirements for holders of Diplomatic, Official/Service and Ordinary passports.
“In this regard, you are hereby informed that nationals of the Republic of Ghana holding valid Diplomatic, Official/Service and Ordinary biometric passports are, with immediate effect, exempt from visa requirements,” reads part of a circular issued by Department of Immigration Director General Japhet Lishomwa.
On Thursday, Zambia and Ghana signed 10 agreements and memoranda of understanding spanning a wide range of sectors.
The agreements were concluded during Ghanaian President John Mahama’s three-day official visit to Zambia.
Among them is the visa waiver arrangement, which eliminates entry requirements for holders of diplomatic, official/service and ordinary passports, a move aimed at easing travel and movement between the two countries.
The waiver has since come into effect and is expected to facilitate easier movement, boost trade and people-to-people interaction, beyond the light-hearted social media banter over Ghana’s iconic fugu attire.
Visa waiver programmes offer significant benefits for international travel, including faster processing, convenience and reduced costs for tourism and business travel.
They eliminate the need for lengthy visa application procedures, often allowing travellers to avoid embassy visits and interviews, with many systems relying on simple online authorisations.
