Criminal charges against Ken Ofori-Atta in Ghana ‘not credible’ – Lawyer on why US court gave green light to his green card application

The criminal charges levelled against former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, in Ghana were “not credible,” which is why the United States Immigration Court has given the green light to his application for permanent residency in the United States, his lawyers have said.

“The court finds the criminal charges in Ghana not credible. However, the court’s ruling was made within the context of a United States immigration proceedings. The court’s decision was focused on whether Mr Ofori-Atta met the legal requirements for adjustment of status,” Mr Ofori-Atta’s solicitor, Justice Kusi-Minkah Premo of Minkah-Premo, Osei-Bonsu, Bruce-Cathline & Partners, stated this in a press release dated June 16, 2026.

The press release was issued by the lawyers to announce the outcome of Mr Ofori-Atta’s I-485 petition for a Green Card, paving the way for him to obtain lawful permanent residency in the country.

According to the release, the court heard evidence relating to actions taken by Ghana’s Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), including the OSP’s earlier decision to declare Mr Ofori-Atta a fugitive from justice.

The release states that the declaration was made while he was reportedly undergoing medical treatment in the United States and while his lawyers were in communication with investigators in Ghana.

The release further states that the court found the criminal charges against Mr Ofori-Atta in Ghana not credible.

It added, however, that the ruling was made strictly within the context of US immigration proceedings, with the court’s decision focused on whether Mr Ofori-Atta met the legal requirements for adjustment of status.

Mr Ofori-Atta has been charged with a number of counts in relation to decisions taken during his tenure as Finance Minister.
