Bawumia visits Christian Council; NPP flagbearer blames state interference for decline in mission school standards

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has attributed the decline in standards in many mission schools to what he describes as excessive state interference in their administration. He made the remarks during a courtesy visit to the Christian Council of Ghana as part of his engagements with religious leaders and stakeholders.

Dr. Bawumia noted that mission schools historically played a significant role in producing some of Ghana’s finest professionals, leaders, and public servants. According to him, these institutions were known for academic excellence, discipline, and strong moral values.

He argued that the gradual erosion of the authority of religious bodies over the management of their schools has contributed to challenges facing the education sector. He stressed that the original vision and values of many mission schools have been weakened over the years.

The NPP flagbearer emphasized the need for greater collaboration between government and faith-based organizations to restore the quality of education in the country. He suggested that religious institutions should be given a stronger voice in the administration of schools they established.

Leaders of the Christian Council welcomed the visit and used the opportunity to discuss issues affecting the education sector and national development. They reiterated their commitment to supporting efforts aimed at improving educational outcomes across the country.

Dr. Bawumia assured the Council that education would remain a key priority and pledged to work with all stakeholders to strengthen the country’s educational institutions. He stressed that quality education remains critical to Ghana’s long-term development.
