Researchers from The Nippon Foundation and the University of Tokyo have identified substantial deposits of rare minerals in the seabed around Minami-Tori-shima island, according to their official survey report.
The team located approximately 610,000 metric tons of cobalt and 740,000 metric tons of nickel contained within manganese nodules at depths between 17,000-18,700 feet. These minerals are essential components for electric vehicle batteries and other advanced technologies.
Professor Yasuhiro Kato, who led the research, indicated that commercial extraction is planned to begin in 2025, with goals of mining three million tons annually while implementing measures to minimize environmental impact.
