IGP Yohuno Vows to Bring Galamsey Operators to Justice

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno has declared an all-out war on illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey, citing its severe threat to national security and environmental sustainability.

Speaking at the Regional Command Conference at the Police Headquarters on Friday, March 21, 2025, IGP Yohuno emphasized the gravity of the situation, highlighting the brutal attacks on innocent civilians and forest guards by armed criminals in regions such as Western North.

"Illegal mining poses a security risk, particularly in our forest reserves and mining communities. In regions like the Western North and many others, armed criminals have carried out brutal attacks on innocent people, including forest guards without justification," he stated. The IGP's strong stance underscores the urgent need for decisive action to combat the menace, which has long been blamed for deforestation, pollution of water bodies, and loss of livelihoods in affected communities.

IGP Yohuno instructed Regional Commanders to adopt a coordinated and strategic approach to tackle the crisis, emphasizing that "this lawlessness must not be allowed to continue."

He declared, "We are declaring war on crimes related to illegal mining and I expect every regional commander to take decisive action to bring perpetrators to justice". This nationwide operation aims to combat illegal mining and restore security in affected communities.
