Steve Harvey's wife, Marjorie Harvey, quickly came to her husband's defense after he mistakenly announced the wrong winner during Sunday's Miss Universe pageant, in his first time hosting the event. On Monday, she posted a photo of herself and Harvey and wrote in the caption that she was "proud" of him for owning up to his mistake.
“You are a stand-up man and a true class act that way you went back out on the stage on live TV and took full responsibility alone," she said. "I am so proud to be your wife! I love you."
Marjorie also re-posted a photo of Steve apologizing to Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach.
As previously reported, the 58-year-old comedian and talk show host said during the live broadcast from Las Vegas that Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutiérrez Arévalo had won the 2015 competition. However, the crown was supposed to go to Wurtzbach.
Harvey quickly realized his mistake and issued an apology during the show as Arevalo celebrated on stage.
“Listen folks, let me just take control of this. I will take responsibility for this," Harvey said as the crown was removed from Arevalo's head and placed on Wurtzbach. ”It was my mistake, it was on the card. Horrible mistake… Still a great night. Please don’t hold it against the ladies. We feel so bad.”
Steve also took to Twitter to apologize for the mix-up:
The comedian's wife wasn't the only person to show support for Harvey. Magic Johnson told his friend in atweet to "keep the faith and keep going strong," while Al Roker posted that "Live TV is tough."
"@IAmSteveHarvey took responsibility and nobody got hurt. Nobody better," Roker added. Singer Chris Jamison also lashed out at people bashing Harvey, writing, "Sick of seeing things about @IAmSteveHarvery We all make mistakes under pressure. Even professionals."
Donald Trump, who sold the Miss Universe Organization to WME/IMG in September, didn't have any sympathy for Harvey and ranted on Twitter that the mishap wouldn't have happened if he were still in charge.
"Very sad what happened last night at the Miss Universe Pageant," he wrote. "I sold it six months ago for a record price. This would have never happened!”
Trump's sale of the Miss Universe organization came after television partners dropped the pageant broadcast in response to comments Trump made about illegal immigrants during his presidential campaign.
