Thousands of Ghanaians attended the much anticipated ‘Dumsormuststop vigil’ in Accra on Saturday.
The protestors clad in red and black outfits marched from the Total Filling station opposite the University of Ghana to the Tetteh Quarshie Interchange here in the Greater Accra Region.
The vigil was led by Yvonne Nelson and other celebrities such as Efya, DKB, Sydney,Van Vicker and a host of others.
Comedian David Oscar who had recently been in the news for vilifying the organizers joined the protest.
Also, the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) Alhaji Halidu Haruna who called the female celebrities championing the event “as unmarried prostitutes” on his Facebook page attempted to join the group.
He was however whisked away by the Police after participants hooted and attempted to beat him up.
Lawyer for the celebrities, Kofi Bentil said the protest is a “revelation that people are indeed suffering from the power crisis.”
One of the main organizers, Sarkodie, could attend the event because he is away in the United States. Outspoken actress, Lydia Forson was also absent.
The peaceful protest was aimed at pressurizing government to resolve the three-year power crisis which is hurting businesses.
Citi FM’s Godwin Allotey reported that “some protesters came with ‘bobo’, lanterns and torch lights, which they lit as the night fell.”
